Mini Excavator Dry Hire vs Wet Hire: Which Do You Need?

Kubota U17-3 mini excavator comparing dry hire vs wet hire for residential excavation

If you’re comparing mini excavator dry hire vs wet hire, the main difference is simple: dry hire gives you the machine to operate yourself, while wet hire includes an operator. Neither option is automatically better. The right choice depends on the job, your experience, how much time you have plus whether you want to operate the excavator yourself.

Quick answer

Dry hire means you hire the excavator without an operator. You operate the machine yourself and control how you use the hire time.

Wet hire means the excavator comes with an operator. You’re paying for the machine plus the person operating it.

Dry hire can make a lot of sense for straightforward residential work where you’re comfortable operating the machine or happy to learn the basic controls. Wet hire can be the better choice for difficult excavation, complex sites or jobs where an experienced operator may complete the work much faster.

What is mini excavator dry hire?

With dry hire, you’re hiring the excavator rather than an excavator plus operator.

Digger2Hire operates as a dry hire business, with compact excavators available across different machine sizes. You hire the machine and included attachments, then operate the excavator yourself. The Kubota U17-3 1.7T mini excavator is a good example of how our dry hire works.

At handover, we can give you a rundown of the machine, show you the controls and explain the basics before you start.

If you haven’t operated a mini excavator before, that doesn’t automatically mean dry hire isn’t an option. Some first-time customers become comfortable with the basic controls relatively quickly after the handover, but there is no universal learning time. The job, site, machine and operator all matter.

For workplace use, competency, information, instruction, training and supervision requirements still apply. Dry hire does not remove the responsibility to operate plant safely and within the limits of the machine and site.

There’s no reason to rush. Take some time to understand how the controls respond before starting the actual excavation.

What is mini excavator wet hire?

Wet hire includes an operator with the excavator.

Instead of operating the machine yourself, you explain what needs to be done and the operator carries out the excavation.

You’re paying for more than the machine. You’re also paying for the operator’s time, experience and ability to carry out the work efficiently.

For some jobs, that’s money well spent. An experienced operator may be able to complete difficult excavation much faster than someone learning as they go.

Why can dry hire be cheaper?

The obvious difference is that dry hire doesn’t include the cost of an operator.

There can also be another advantage for DIY and residential projects: you’re not paying someone to wait while you organise the job around the excavator.

Imagine you’re putting in a retaining wall. You might need to dig several post holes, remove some soil, cut a drainage trench and reshape part of the yard.

Between those jobs, you may need to measure something, move materials, mark the next hole or work out exactly where the trench needs to run.

With dry hire, the excavator is there for the hire period. You can stop, measure, move something out of the way and then continue when you’re ready.

With wet hire, operator time has a value. If the machine plus operator are waiting while the rest of the job catches up, you’re still using booked time.

Dry hire gives you control over the pace of the job

This is one of the biggest advantages for many private customers.

You don’t necessarily want to excavate continuously from the moment the machine arrives until the moment it leaves.

You might dig a section, check the level, reposition materials, install something and then continue excavating.

Dry hire lets the machine fit around the way you’re doing the project rather than making the entire project fit around an operator’s booked hours.

What jobs can suit dry hire?

Dry hire can work particularly well for straightforward residential excavation where you have enough time to work at your own pace.

Depending on the site plus the machine, that can include:

  • backyard landscaping
  • drainage trenches
  • stormwater trenches
  • irrigation work
  • post holes
  • retaining-wall preparation
  • garden excavation
  • moving and shaping soil
  • small footing excavation
  • general property projects

Do I need excavator experience for dry hire?

Not necessarily.

Being a first-time operator doesn’t automatically mean you need wet hire. The type of job matters just as much as whether you’ve used an excavator before.

A straightforward backyard job with room to move can be very different from excavating beside a structure, working on a steep slope or attempting a difficult deep excavation.

When does wet hire make more sense?

There are jobs where paying for an experienced operator can be the smarter option.

Wet hire may make more sense where:

  • the excavation is complex
  • the site is difficult or steep
  • you’re working close to structures
  • there is very little room for error
  • the job involves substantial excavation
  • operator speed and productivity matter more than the hourly cost
  • you simply don’t want to operate the machine yourself

A skilled operator can make difficult work look easy because they’ve spent a lot of time on the controls. For the right job, the extra cost of wet hire can be offset by getting the excavation completed much faster.

On construction and other workplaces, regulators also emphasise operator competency, safe systems of work, ground conditions, underground services and separation of people from moving plant. Those considerations apply regardless of whether the excavator is dry hired or supplied with an operator.

Don’t choose dry hire just because the daily price is lower

The cheapest daily hire rate isn’t necessarily the cheapest way to finish the project.

If an experienced operator can complete a difficult job in a few hours but it takes you two days, wet hire may have been better value.

The opposite can also be true. If you’ve got a weekend of smaller jobs with plenty of stopping, measuring and changing between tasks, paying an operator for all that time may make little sense.

Think about the total job, not just the advertised hourly or daily rate. Our mini excavator hire cost guide can help you compare the complete hire cost, including attachments, transport, GST and likely hire time.

The machine still needs to suit the job

Choosing dry or wet hire is only half the decision. You still need the right size excavator.

A 1.7T machine can be an excellent choice for restricted residential access plus general excavation. It isn’t automatically the right machine for every job.

If you have a large amount of earth to move plus unrestricted access, a larger excavator may be more productive regardless of who operates it.

Digger2Hire’s practical view

We provide dry hire, but that does not mean dry hire is the right answer for every job. A straightforward, accessible residential project can be a good fit for self-operated hire. A difficult excavation beside structures, services, steep ground or other higher-risk conditions may be better handled by an experienced operator or specialist contractor.

The useful question is not simply which option has the lower advertised rate? It is which option is the sensible way to complete this particular job?

Mini excavator dry hire vs wet hire: which should you choose?

If you’re comparing mini excavator dry hire vs wet hire, think about the job rather than assuming one option is always cheaper or better.

Choose dry hire when the job is suitable for you to operate the machine, you want flexibility plus you’re happy to work at your own pace.

Choose wet hire when the excavation is difficult, operator experience could save substantial time or you simply want someone else to do the machine work.

For many residential projects, dry hire gives you a useful combination of flexibility plus value. You have the machine available during the hire period and can work through the project in the order that makes sense for you.

If the job is beyond what makes sense for a 1.7T machine or a first-time operator, we’ll help you work out whether another machine size or wet hire would be more appropriate.
